Our Solutions At Work
Bridges over troubled waters in Washington state |
|
PROJECT: The Mercer Slough interchange consists of several bridges on pilings, built over wetlands, that carry the I-90 mainline and ramps in Bellevue, Washington. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) needed to monitor deflections of the pilings caused by shifting of the wetlands soil. {MS}
CHALLENGE: Lateral movement in the 60-foot-thick peat deposit in the wetlands necessitates repairs to existing bridges and structural design changes for new structures. WSDOT requires detailed, accurate data on the bridges and pilings for both projects.
THE LEICA GEOSYSTEMS SOLUTION: An automated Leica Geosystems Global Positioning System (GPS) was installed on the Mercer Slough interchange. The GPS system monitors movement of the bridge's structure in real-time with millimeter-level accuracy.
RESULT: Leica's advanced bridge monitoring technology provides WSDOT with an attractive and efficient solution for real-time bridge monitoring. The monitors collect accurate data to aid WSDOT in transportation infrastructure management decisions.
