Leica Geosystems HDS laser scanner maps a levee damaged by hurricane Katrina |
|
PROJECT: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACOE) retained a number of surveying companies to map levees and related structures damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The mapping was the first step toward improving and strengthening these walls, so they can prevent flooding during hurricanes and storms. {GW}
CHALLENGE: The Rock Island District of USACOE contracted with Stanley Consultants, engineering and construction firm, to map a six-mile stretch of Lake Pontchartrain along the southern shore. The damage done by Katrina to New Orleans made finding a stable control point difficult. Existing survey control monuments had subsided in the wake of post-Katrina flooding.
THE LEICA GEOSYSTEMS SOLUTION: Stanley's surveying subcontractor, Martin & Whiteacre Surveyor & Engineers, used a Leica Geosystems HDS3000 ScanStation to produce 3D laser scan surveys for the flood gates, seawalls, and site structures.
RESULT: "The HDS3000 proved to be a real workhorse on this complex and difficult job," says Gary Whiteacre, president of Martin & White. "When it comes to capturing detailed information on a complex structure, "There is no comparison in terms of speed and accuracy. Without this technology, we would have had to take a large number of single measurements and connect the dots - and probably do a lot of hand sketches on a clipboard."
