Leica Geosystems helps ensure tunnel safety in Singapore's underground train system

PROJECT: Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train system consists of a series of interconnected underground tunnels. When construction of a college campus located over two tunnels of the Dhoby Ghaut Station began, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) decided to install an automatic tunnel monitoring system. Wisecan Engineering Services (WES) was hired as the surveyor for the project.{DP}

CHALLENGE: When construction and excavation take place near a tunnel, that tunnel must be monitored for movement and distortion. With accurate 24/7 monitoring, project teams can be forewarned if any preventative measures are needed.

THE LEICA GEOSYSTEMS SOLUTION: A network of 8 Leica TCA2002 total stations was used to monitor a 500-meter tunnel. Because the tunnel is curved, over 2,000 prisms - including 60 bi-directional prisms - were installed at 3-meter intervals on the roof, walls, and floor.

RESULT: The TCA2003 total stations transmit data via GSM modem. Should the measurement exceed the trigger levels, warning messages are automatically sent to the responsible people, ensuring that the alert is received on time for corrective actions to be taken. "We are very confident that Leica instruments provide consistency," says WES Managing Director Chua Keng Guan. "At the end of the day, Leica outperforms the rest."
