Leica SP Technology Just Got Better
(2 minutes 36 seconds)

From the field

  A Solid Bet
Within only a few short months of fitting the Leica ALS60 sensor and RCD105 camera into WR&D’s Bell 206L Long Ranger helicopter, Grigsby and his colleague Alan Moore, a project engineer, were testing the solidity of that risk in the Colorado canyon, meandering the narrow corridor and hugging its walls - at times to within 200 feet - at varying speeds, direction and changes in elevation to survey an existing power line.

Laser Scanning, Orthophotos and BIM Converge to Facilitate Restoration
In the BIM environment, laser scanning is one of the few speedy, accurate ways to gather as-built conditions on existing structures. In some cases, such as the historic Saenger Theater in New Orleans, it was the only option.

Leica Geosystems Wild Ride: PSM visits historic Swiss headquarters
On a recent trip to Heerbrugg, Switzerland, Jim Fleming, a contributor to Professional Surveyor Magazine, had the privilege of visiting Leica Geosystems’ headquarters. With an opportunity to get a rare glimpse into the Swiss company’s inner workings, Fleming returned home impressed with the company’s methodology in designing and producing its equipment. Beyond that, he was impressed with the history and how the company’s roots continue to affect today’s world for the professional surveyor.

3D Laser Scanning in Room Acoustics
Every room has different acoustics determined by its construction and room geometry. Listeners' auditory impressions are based on the objective human sense of hearing. It is often difficult to capture the spatial geometry of existing rooms with asymmetric room geometry to scale. Until now, the effectiveness of auralization to model the acoustics of asymmetric rooms has been limited and inaccurate. 3D laser scanning was proposed as a solution for auralization.

  Reacting to Climate Change
Over the last decades, Sweden has suffered from significantly rising numbers of floods, landslides, and erosion. The persistent and increasing risk will affect buildings, roads and infrastructure. The Swedish government has granted a considerable amount of money to protect Sweden's society, infrastructure, industry and agriculture. One of the preventative measures is a new digital elevation model using Leica ALS60 airborne laser scanners.
