3D Laser Scanning and Surveying Collide
An architectural firm called on LandAir Surveying surveyors to scan downtown Cobb County in the area of a proposed courthouse, create a 3D model and then incorporate the new courthouse design into the model as part of a bidding process. After a demonstration of laser scanning at a SPAR conference and another by a Leica Geosystems representative, LandAir Surveying bought the Leica 3000 scanner in 2005. Today the firm uses the HDS6100, HDS6000 and the ScanStation II scanners.

Surveying in 3D - A next-generation scanner helps Loy Surveys stay on the cutting edge
Loy Surveys was tasked with surveying three cooling towers at the refinery to identify any movement, shape change or deformation in the tower structures. Previously, this work had been carried out by other firms using total stations to survey points at set heights along a number of meridians around each tower—a risky and labor-intensive job that can take two or more days per tower. Scanning seemed like an ideal fit.

They found a corroded bronze buckle used to fasten tourniquets during amputations, a makeshift tobacco pipe with teeth marks in the stem, and a picture frame folded and kept after the daguerreotype it held was lost.
