Fun Facts
Did you know that a Leica robotic total station was used to map out the path of a robotic vacuum cleaner? It's true! A Leica 360 degree prism was mounted on the top of a robotic vacuum cleaner and the Leica TPS1200 tracked its progress around a 20' x 30' test area to determine area density coverage.

Interpretation of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge GPS Data

In 2003, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Leica Geosystems, Inc. installed three Leica RS500 GPS receivers with LEIAT504 antennas on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge as part of a structure monitoring demonstration project. The GPS receivers were placed at the top of the two towers and at the midpoint of the center span. A fixed GPS reference site was also established on the shore several miles away. Data from all four sites were collected at a one second rate and archived at the FDOT offices. General Positioning LLC (GPos) was invited to evaluate approximately six months of the data taken from mid-August 2004 through January 2005.

Uses of Scanning in Asset Management

Many professionals quickly associate laser scanning with creating as-builts for use by engineers or designers. However, scanning is used successfully in all stages of an asset's lifecycle, not just as the "retrofit design stage." This article, the third in a mini-series that describes the use of scanning in other stages of an asset's lifecycle, covers uses in the Asset Management (or Maintenance & Operations) stage.
